What's New on Overdirve for August 2021

Here are some of our favorite titles that have just been added to Overdive for you to check out and read on your favorite device:

Blackout by Various Authors: If you don't have the time to commit to an entire book or series may we suggest this? Six amazing authors present a series of short stories that are all connected by a single unifying thread: they all take place during a blackout in New York City in the middle of a heat wave. The stories tell the tales of a pair of angry exes, long-time besties, perfect strangers and more, told by authors like Dhonielle Clayton (The Belles) and Angie Thomas (The Hate U Give).

Kingdom of the Wicked by Kerri Maniscalo: A new series from the author of Stalking Jack the Ripper promises a whole new kind of chills. Emilia and Vittoria are twins and secret witches, living in secret in Sicilian society and working normal jobs at their family's restaurant... that is until the night Emila finds Vittoria brutally murdered and mutilated. Her grief leads her on a quest for vengeance at any cost, even if it means using the darkest of magic. Magic that is completely forbidden, and threatens to unleash hell itself upon the earth.

Love and Other Natural Disasters by Misa Sugiura: Nozomi was sure this was going to be the summer she would get a girlfriend. She was NOT expecting this would be the summer she would be suckered into a fake relationship to make her actual crush's ex jealous. But that's ok, because Nozomi has a plan! She is going to turn her fake romance into a real thing by making Willow see she really is the perfect girl for her and turn fauxmance into romance or else!

What's New on Hoopla for August 2021

We have some great new titles for you to enjoy on Hoopla Digital this month! Here are some of our favorites:

Cloakers
by Alexandra Lapointe: Crystia is a Cloaker: an elite member of a secret society of shape shifters tasked with maintaining order in society. The problem is, Crystia never wanted the job. She was one of dozens  kids stolen from her family at a young age by the Black Coats, and genetically modified into becoming what she now is. Now she wants out, and she and the other Cloakers will do anything it takes to make it to freedom and reunite with their families.

How to Break an Evil Curse
by Laura Morrison: The first book in the new Chronicles of Fritillary series shows us why it's a really bad idea to fight with your BFF... especially if your BFF happens to be an evil wizard. The king of Fritillary learns this the hard way when his former bestie curses his firstborn daughter to die if she is ever touched by the sunlight. Of course the king decides the only way to keep Princess Juliana safe is to lock her in a dungeon... but never count a girl with a serving spoon down because after 8 years of digging a VERY big hole the princess is FINALLY free and she is off to see the world... and free herself from her curse!

Like Other Girls
by Britta Lundin: Mara did not mean to start a revolution when she tried out for the boys football team. She just wanted to get back on a team after getting kicked out of girl's basketball for fighting. It's not her fault she's really good at it, and it's not her fault four other girls joined the team, and it's DEFINITELY not her fault those four actually DO suck, but now the team, including her own brother blame her for "ruining" the team. If Mara has any hope of impressing the coach, and her crush Valentina (who just happens to be one of the 4 other girls on the team) it's up to her to whip these girls into shape and turn this team around!

Walls
by L.M. Elliot: 1960 is was not an easy year for the city of Berlin. It was politically divided, and in about a year it would be literally divided by a huge wall that would separate the city into Democracy and Communism. This division is already becoming apparent in Drew's own family, since he lives in West Berlin in an Army family, while his cousin Matthias is in East Berlin, dodging the secret police and smuggling outlawed rock music, which if he is caught with, could get him sent to a work-camp for hard labor and "re-education."

Weird stuff that might be caused by the creepy doctors who run both schools.

Martian Ghost Centaur by Mat Heagerty and Steph Mided: The Town of Southborough was once a major tourist destination that was said to be the home of the famous sasquatch after multiple sightings of the cryptid over the years. A tech company by the name of Start-up.com, a start-up that helps people start their own start-ups, decides to take advantage of Southborough's monetary situation and begins buying up various places throughout town to construct a headquarters, in turn pushing out all the local townspeople. Fortunately, Louie O'Connor and her best friend Felix decide they're going to do whatever it takes to drive back tourism while also protecting everything that makes their hometown special. Even if that means creating an elaborate hoax to drive out the Start-up.com takeover.

What if We Were... by Axelle Lenoir: Nathalie and Marie are 17 year old best friends since elementary school who battle boredom by using their imaginations to play a game they invented called "What if We Were...?" The rules are simple: one player names a topic, such as "Vikings" or "vampire slayers," then both players imagine what life would be like as that subject. Easy enough to play, but hard to master. After all these years, Nathalie and Marie are experts as they have mastered how to think outside the box and creatively surprise each other. But what if a new player decided to join the game? And what if she was really hot? Find out if Nathalie and Marie survive the next round without heartbreak in this graphic novel that proves there's nothing better than using your imagination.

There is so much new on Overdrive this month, we don't even know where to begin! New series are beginning, old series are ending, and authors we love are releasing LOOOOONG awaited new titles! Here are four that we are sure you are going to love this April!

The Cousins by Karen McManus: The author of One of Us is Lying and One of Us is Next is back with a brand new stand-alone novel to keep you on the edge of your seat. Milly, Jonah and Aubrey Story are cousins who come from one of the richest families in New England, but they have never met their grandparents. That's because one day, for reasons no one has ever explained each of their parents got a letter from the cousins grandmother saying she never wanted to speak to any member of the family again. Then, just as mysteriously, decades later, the three cousins get another letter, inviting them to come work for their secretive grandmother at the family's upscale resort on their private island. The cousins don't want to go, but their parents, hoping to get back into the will, force them to, with terrifying consequences.

The Desolations of Devil's Acre by Ransom Riggs (Book 6 in the Miss Peregrine's Series): After 10 years and 6 books, we have reached the end. Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children reaches its conclusion with this final volume. Jacob and Noor are back in Florida, at Jacob's grandad's house and Caul is building an army. The apocalypse is coming, marked by storms made of ashes, bones and blood, and only the peculiars can stop it.

The Gilded Ones by Namina Forna: Fans of Ninth House and Wings of Ebony are going to want to pick this one up for sure! Deka has always been an outcast in her village because of her strange power: she is unnaturally intuitive. Now, as she turns 16 and readies for her tribe's blood ceremony she prays with all her might that her blood will be normal and red, and not cursed and gold, which will mean she is cursed and must suffer a terrible fate. Of course, her blood runs gold. Deka is terrified until a strange woman arrives to tell her that he blood is not actually a curse but a gift. It marks her as a warrior. A gilded one. A protector, and one of the few who can save her country from doom.

What's New On Overdrive?

Ok, so we might have gone a little bananas and ordered WAY too many great new books for you to check out on Overdrive. Here are four we think you might enjoy for the month of February:

City of Villains
by Estelle Laure
: All we can say about this one is: it's Disney villains, meets DC comics. No, seriously, it is, and it's kind of awesome. Mary Elizabeth is an intern at Monarch City PD, and she FINALLY gets to work a case like a real detective when a young woman goes missing. It all seems pretty straightforward until she meets a girl with horns, a sea monster (well, ok, technically a LAKE monster, but still!) and a bunch of other weird things that definitely should not be in the dark and mysterious city! If you are a fan of anything Disney, or Batman/Barbara Gordon, you just have to read this one.

A Complicated Love Story Set in Space by Shaun David Hutchinson: Noa goes to bed on a typical night, and somehow wakes up on a space ship, with no idea how he got there. Also, the ship is about to explode. Which is bad. Luckily there are two other people on the ship... but neither one remembers how they got there either. Which is also bad. Of course this is the worst possible time to fall in love, but that is exactly what starts to happen to Noa as he develops feelings for DJ, one of the other passengers. As if you needed more reasons to read this one: there are also aliens and a murder. This is a fun, LGBTQ+ romance, set in.... well, space. Duh.

Unchosen by Katharyn Blair: Ok, so first, it's a standalone fantasy, which as you may know is SUPER hard to find these days! Also, there are elements of fairy tales AND horror here so what's not to love. Charlotte is dealing with two massive disasters: one, the boy she is madly in love with is in love with her sister, and two, everyone around her is basically turning into zombies thanks to the Crimson, a disease spread by eye contact. Only the Chosen One can rid the world of the Crimson, and it turns out Charlotte is most definitely NOT the chosen one... but the band of marauders looking for the chosen one THINK she is, which is just... bad. Perfect for fans of fairy tale retellings with a twist!

Wings of Ebony by J. Elle: Rue is a typical girl just trying to live her life in Houston, Texas until the day her world is shattered completely. When her mother is shot dead right outside their home, Rue must not only cope with her loss, but she must cope with something she never expected in her wildest dreams: the father she never knew comes into her life to take custody of her and her sister. Oh, and by the way, her father is actually a God. who wants to take Rue to live in a magical city for those with magical powers, which now, includes Rue. Perfect for fans of Tomi Adeyemi and Angie Thomas.

All of these books and many more are available for you to borrow from Overdrive today!

New Manga in November

Fresh hot new manga series have just arrived at the YCLD and they're ready for you to check out from your nearest branch! Here are four of our favorites!

Fushigi Yugi - Byakko Senki
by Yuu Watase: 24 years after the original Fushigi Yugi manga finished its original, massively successful run, we are once again invited to journey into the Universe of the Four Gods. The setting is 1923, and Suzuno's father is the keeper of a very special book: The Universe of the Four Gods, a book which Suzuno has been warned since childhood is only every supposed to be touched by men. But, when a massive earthquake strikes and Suzuno and her father become trapped, dad makes the ultimate decision: to saver his daughter's life by letting her touch the book - and allowing her to be sucked into its pages and into the Universe of the Four Gods.

Manga Yokai Stories - Ghostly Tales from Japan
by Lafcadio Hearn: Ok, yes, we know, Halloween is over, but come on! It's always a good time for a creepy story! This book contains seven different creepy short stories, illustrated in manga form spanning some of the creepiest legends from Japanese history. The illustrations are both beautiful and creepy, and there's something here for fans of all kinds of creepy stories from ghosts, to haunted items and more.

Sayonara Football
by Naoshi Arakawa: Nozomi wants nothing more in the world than to play football (soccer). It's her complete obsession. Unfortunately there are no leagues in her area for girls, and the boys do not ant her on their team. When she finally meets Midori and Sumire, a couple of other female players (who also happen to be bitter cross-town rivals) she sees this as her chance to be accepted and make a team... if she can bring the two rivals together somehow. The problem is, despite her obsession and tough talk, Nozomi is kind of a terrible soccer player, and is constantly kicking goals into her own net!

Spy X Family
by Endo Tatsuya: Twilight is the world's greatest spy, and has just been assigned his most complex mission of all time. Unfortunately for him, the mission requires him to infiltrate a super fancy private school, which means Twilight needs a family, so he can have a child to enroll in the school. At the world's shadiest orphanage, Twilight finds a little girl named Anya, who he figures will do just fine. What he doesn't know is that Anya is actually psychic and can read his mind, so she knows exactly what he's up to, and thinks she's the luckiest kid alive to be adopted by a real-life spy. When Twilight meets shy, unassuming Yor he figures he has also found himself the perfect fake wife... except for the fact that Yor is the world's deadliest assassin. No one realizes this except mind-reader Anya though, and stuff starts to get SUPER weird and SUPER fun!
