Summer Video Contest

Did you know that we are not the only library district that hosts a summer reading program? There's actually an organization called CSLP (The Collaborative Summer Library Program) that sponsors summer reading programs just like ours in libraries all around the country. They're also the people who come up with the themes each year, AND this year they are sponsoring a nation-wide video contest that you can participate in!
They want you (or anyone you know who is ages 13-18) to create a public-service announcement style video representing this year's theme "Imagine Your Story" and encouraging people to read and visit the library. It can't be longer than 60 seconds and has to be totally "G" rated. For complete rules and an entry form you can visit the contest page here: Teen Video Challenge.
Five winners will be chosen from around the country, and we hope to see some fun entries from Yuma County! Good luck! Go out there and get creative!

Summer Reading is Here!

Even though things are a little different this year, the Yuma County Library District is doing our annual Summer Reading Program. This year's theme is "Imagine Your Story" and it's all about fairy tales, myths and legends from all over the world.
This year's program is completely virtual, so if you want to participate, you will need to download the program app, which is called ReadSquared and is available in app stores for both Android and IOS. You can either sign up for your own account, or your parent or guardian can sign up with a family account and register everyone in the family all at once. Don't forget, we have programs for little kids and adults as well as for teens, so everyone can participate.
The app is really fun and easy to use, and you can unlock badges for completing program goals and doing special challenges. Once you have competed the program by earning a certain amount of points, you will automatically be entered into a drawing for an awesome gift basket provided by the Friends of the Yuma County Library!
Join up today, you have until July 18th to complete the program!

The Peeps Are Back!

For many years, it was a tradition at YCLD to host an annual contest where people would make shoe-box dioramas of their favorite books and movies using only marshmallow Peeps candy as the "people" in the scenes. No one really knows why we stopped doing this contest, but the teen staff loved it, so this year, we are bringing it back as a month-long teen program.

Basically all you need to do to enter is come see us in the Main Library Teen Room, and ask Alex, Nikki or Elia for an entry form. Then create a diorama and bring it in to us by March 31st. In April we will have some impartial people come in to judge the contest and choose the top 3 best dioramas as well as let people vote for the "Peeple's Choice" winner. Winners will receive a trophy, a cool prize and bragging rights for the year.

Check out the pictures below, from past year's contests for some inspo, but please don't copy! All your work should be original. The contest begins today so stop in and grab your entry form!

PLEASE NOTE: THIS CONTEST IS FOR AGES 13-18 ONLY. INDIVIDUAL ENTRIES ONLY (NO GROUP CATEGORY)

2012 Entry "Harry Peeper" based on the Harry Potter books

2012 Entry "Oliver Peep" based on "Oliver Twist"

2011 Entry "Peep Holes" based on the book "Holes"

October Teen Art Contest

Some of you know that this year during the Summer Reading program, the Main Library's teen room hosted our first ever art contest. Well, it was so popular we decided to have another one for the month of October! Here's what you need to know:

* The contest is open to anyone living in Yuma County who is between the ages of 13 and 18.

* Each artist may only submit ONE piece of art. It must not be larger than 8" by 12".

* We will start accepting art on October 1st and we will stop accepting art on November 2nd at 5PM. Judging will take place November 3rd.

* Due to space limitations, only 2-dimensional art will be accepted, so no sculptures or other 3D pieces please.

* Any medium is just fine, but all art has to be 100% original work (no tracing or editing of other people's original art). High quality photocopies or high-resolution scans of your original work are fine to submit.

*This is a Halloween themed art contest, so your art has to be related to: Anime, Movies, TV shows, Video Games, Comics and Manga (No YouTube fandoms will be accepted).

* Your art must feature at least one character from your fandom in a Halloween costume.

* Your art can be turned in in person at the Main Library teen room or you cane-mail a scan to teen@yumalibrary.org

*After the contest, you must pick up your work no later than Saturday, November 16th by 5PM or it becomes property of the teen room.

* Top 3 places will be chosen by a panel of impartial judges, and a voting jar will be available for one week after November 3rd to pick a "people's choice" winner.

If you have any questions about the contest, you can e-mail us at teen@yumalibrary.org, come into the teen room and speak to Dominique or call us at 928-373-6479.

Below are some examples of the artwork turned in for the LibraryCon's art contest back in May.
